Post Pitts Performance Region 7 report
June 16, 2009

Team Pitts Performance use local knowledge to score 6 wins and 23 top five finishes at CalSpeed IKF.

CalSpeed Karting Center, Fontana, CA
The Los Angeles Kart Club hosted round 5 of the IKF Region 7 Championship Series presented by Bridgestone and once again Pitts Performance drivers were at the forefront of the action. Pitt’s crew of drivers scored an impressive 6 wins with 23 top five finishes. Tyler Palmer and Ethan Barrett led the way both posting a pair of wins in Junior Superbox (Palmer) and Kid Kart (Barrett). Colton Herta and Slater Stowell also put their name on the winner’s trophy in Rookie Sportsman (Herta) and Junior 1 (Stowell).

Tyler Palmer’s wins in Junior Superbox came at the expense of fellow Pitts driver Jake Craig and weekend rival Taylor Miinch. Palmer controlled the pace both Saturday and Sunday to score the wins. Craig wasn’t quite up to Palmer’s pace on Saturday but he still scored 3rd. Sunday was a different story as Palmer and Craig kept Miinch in a Pitts sandwich.

Ethan Barrett’s Kid Kart weekend was filled with a little of everything to keep him on his toes. Three drivers were DQ’d after Saturday qualifying including Barrett, but that and his DNF in the prefinal did little to stop him in the final. Another Pitts driver, Jerett Tachovsky led the opening laps of the final before a charging Barrett took over the lead and drove it home for the win. Tachovsky maintained 2nd place while Tommy Trickle came home 4th. Sunday was again Barrett’s day to shine and he easily took home his second win for the weekend. Tachovsky had track assistance from a corner worker ending his run for another podium finish, but fellow Pitts drivers Anthony Sawyer and Trickle took up the slack to finish in 3rd and 5th.

Although slightly overshadowed by double wins from fellow teammates there is no denying the sweetness of your first IKF Region 7 win, especially when it comes in a class like Rookie Sportsman. Colton Herta left Willow’s IKF race with a new confidence and determination and he brought it with him this weekend to CalSpeed. Herta was in the mix for every one of the Cadet races showing ferocity that we hadn’t yet seen from him. Rookie Sportsman was a close one from the get go as Herta qualified off pole. Herta and fellow Pitt’s driver, Christian Brooks challenged in the prefinal, but Womack was able to come out on top and start the final from the pole. For the first half of the race it was Womack leading the way, but Herta’s kart came in and took over by the crossed flags. Herta kept the pace high trying to negate any challenges from behind, but only Herta, Brooks and one other had made the final selection. With one corner remaining it looked like Herta would hold on for his first IKF Region 7. Smith dove to the inside of Brooks allowing Herta to freely drive on to victory. Brooks countered coming off the final turn and drag raced Smith to the line to keep 2nd place, making it a Pitts 1-2 finish.

Slater Stowell’s year has been so good that leaving a race weekend with only one win seems like a wasted effort. Certainly it isn’t, but to date few can match Stowell’s week in and week out in the win column. This weekend was no exception as he ran up front in all his classes. Sunday’s Junior 1 was especially sweet as he had a problem in qualifying and started the prefinal back in 16th. By the end of the prefinal Stowell was up to 3rd and in contention for the win. The final saw driver’s jockey for position lap after lap and after a short stint in the lead Stowell seemed content to ride along in the front train a few karts back of the lead. Late race moves broke up the leaders just a little bit but that didn’t stop them from going 4 wide off the last corner for the win. Stowell somehow jockeyed his way to the line first. Jake Drew made it two Pitt’s drivers in the top five.

Other notable Pitt’s drivers who might not have won, but gave the good fight all the way to the checkered flag were:
Adrian Starrantino
Jake Craig
Christain Brooks
Chris Trickle
Tommy Trickle
Anthony Sawyer
Kyle Shriver
Jerett Tachovsky
Jake Drew
Josh Kurtz
Erik Jackson
Dane LaTorre
