Team Pitts Performance drivers BBQ’d up the field Santa Maria style at the final round of the 2009 IKF Region 7 Championship Series presented by Bridgestone.
Santa Maria Kart Track, Santa Maria, California
Team Pitts Performance serve up the smack down well-done at the last race of the 2009 IKF Region 7 Championship Series presented by Bridgestone the weekend of December 5th-6th. Team Pitts Performance drivers earned nine wins and six poles on the weekend, no other team even came close.
Heading up the Pitts charge this weekend were Ethan Barrett and Jake Craig, each posting 2 trips to victory lane. Barrett was literally unstoppable from the first laps on track. It is not too often you see a driver a second and a half ahead of the field in qualifying, but Barrett was. He managed to keep that ferocious pace through the Kid Kart prefinal and into the final. By the end of lap one Barrett was on his way to Pismo Beach, leaving the others to dwell somewhere back in Lompoc. Saturday’s domination was no fluke as he managed to pack on the second for Sunday’s final as well. Barrett swept every timed session on track and leaves the class on a high note heading to Jr. 1 next year. Other Team Pitts Performance Kid Kart drivers Jerett Tachovsky and Anthony Sawyer made it a Pitts sweep of the podium on Saturday. Sawyer traded 2nd place with Tachovsky on Sunday as Jerett had to settle for 4th. Tommy Trickle also represented Pitts in the class but wasn’t quite able to grab a top five finish.
Tyler Palmer and Jake Craig have been the Junior 2 drivers to watch all year. There hasn’t been an IKF race yet this year where they went home empty handed. Palmer this weekend landed two poles, both in Junior Superbox, and he scored the win Sunday in HPV 2. Craig split wins in Junior Superbox and HPV 2 and was Pitt’s second driver to double up in the win category this weekend.
Sometimes it is quality and not quantity that makes the statement, this weekend it was both. Team Pitts Performance drivers score three out of four wins in the heavily contested Cadet classes, with three different drivers. The Cadet podiums are the hardest to earn week in and week out. If you come away from a weekend with one win that’s saying something, but to see Brenden Baker, Colton Herta, and Slater Stowell bring home wins, it was the best possible way to end a season.
Recent Pitts convert, Baker was the only of the trio to score a pole, but we all know in racing it is where you finish that counts. He consistently was the best finisher all weekend long with a 1st, 2nd, 2nd, and 5th, his win coming in HPV 1 on Sunday. He wanted results and Pitts delivered.
Colton Herta got the win of the weekend Sunday in Jr. 1. The racing was spectacular as eight other drivers chased Herta to the finish line. After qualifying Herta knew he was fast. He hinted at a possible win to Go Racing Magazine’s editor Sean Buur and delivered on that prediction. These kids will do anything to get a picture in the magazine. Slater Stowell’s drive on Saturday was just as impressive attacking his way up from 7th to steal the win in the closing moment of HPV1.
Christian Brooks nearly put his #34 kart on pole and ran solidly both days. He factored into many a battle and is just ripe for picking off his first IKF Region win. Brooks, Jacob Drew, Chris Trickle and Chase McDaniel all managed top ten finishes but just missed being on the podium.
Kyle Shriver was THE Sr. driver of the event and his best win came in his Pitts Performance powered HPV 4. The on track action was non stop for the first half of Saturday’s final with Shiver being challenged by many a foe. In the end though Shriver had what he needed to make it to the finish line in first. Sunday was looking like a possible repeat until contact in turn two dropped him well back of the pack. With only 20 laps he pulled back many of the positions he lost, but was unable to score another HPV4 win.
With the season at a close and Championships in their pockets Team Pitts Performance brought the results they have been advertising all year. From Kid Karts to Seniors, Team Pitts Performance is the place to be for results.
